By age six, I knew I wanted to be an actress. My destiny was confirmed as I took the audience by storm while playing the Wicked Witch of the West in “The Wizard of Oz,” as an 8 year old Brownie (the younger version of the Girl Scouts). Born in Cambridge, MA to an East Indian father (from Bombay, India) and an African-American mother, I was raised in Gaithersburg, MD, the middle of three daughters. We’ll lovingly call this combination ‘a Blindian.’ My name in Sanskrit or Hindi means “little goddess.”

As I entered high school, it wasn’t popular to be a ‘thespian’ (this was way before ‘Glee’) so I opted to be a pom-pom girl instead which was much more acceptable. My senior year, I was voted homecoming queen, best personality and a prom princess.
